COTTAGE
About Greencastle...
The cottage is located in the north of the scenic Inishowen Peninsula on the north coast of County Donegal, on Lough Foyle. Donegal is renowned for its unspoilt natural beauty with superb blue flag beaches, spectacular coastline and majestic highlands.
About 2km north east of Greencastle, on the slopes of a hill called Crocknasmug, Carrowhugh Cottages overlook the mouth of Lough Foyle. Looking across the bay into Northern Ireland, this is the narrowest point across the Foyle before it broadens into a wide expanse of water that only narrows again as it approaches Derry and turns into the River Foyle.
Greencastle has transformed itself from a fishing village to a holiday destination in recent years. A Maritime Museum and a Planetarium in the town are well worth a visit in the village. There is also a small golf course near the shore.
A few km down the road is the larger town of Moville, where one can enjoy a variety of restaurants and pubs.
The area is littered with traditional Irish pubs and great Guinness for those who are fans of the black stuff! It is in these hidden parts, that one will be able to get away from it all and enjoy the authenticity of Irish countryside! Greencastle is also home to the famous Kealy's Seafood Bar which boasts the best seafood in the area, fresh each day from Greencastle Pier.
Hill walking and hiking has become an increasingly popular activity, and there are some spectacular walks in the area. A rewarding coastal walk would be along the cliffs from Inishowen Head to Kinnegoe Bay, with its beautiful beaches and the site of the wreck of the Spanish Armada vessel, the La Trinidad Valecera, which went down in 1588.
Take the ultimate Sunday drive while you're here with the '100 Tourist Route' , which is is an approximately 100-mile signposted scenic drive around the peninsula. It takes in or passes nearby most of the tourist attractions and places of interest on the peninsula. This exciting route gets its name from the approximate distance in miles of the signposted drive. You will certainly not wish to break any speed records as you linger and savour the many scenic and historical gems which Inishowen, the biggest of the Donegal peninsulas, has to offer. It's a great way to get a sense of what Donegal has to offer with magestic views and sensational countryside.
